Community Finance Corporation and Lead Guitar – Five Years of Bringing Music to the Kids Who Need It Most

Lead Guitar is a Tucson-based not-for-profit that builds sustainable, year-round classical guitar programs in schools that serve low socio-economic status communities. Using music and an instrument to which young people relate well, students learn technique, music reading, theory, performance skills, and ensemble playing. Through these skills, they develop self-discipline, self-esteem, and the ability to work as a team—attributes that help them realize success throughout their lives.

Community Finance Corporation and Lead Guitar have worked in partnership since 2014 to provide guitar classes, adult mentorship, University experiences and professional development opportunities in some of the most disenfranchised neighborhoods and communities in Southern Arizona. Thanks in large part to the stabilizing effect of CFC’s investment in Lead Guitar’s local programs over the last four years, Lead Guitar has grown dramatically and is garnering national attention as a model for arts education in America's toughest schools.

While Lead Guitar’s growth nationally is exciting to see, CFC and LG are focused on ensuring that the accessibility and delivery of these services in Pima County continues to improve every year. CFC is supporting the cost of instruction at Lead Guitar’s ten most in-need schools in Southern Arizona during the 2018/2019 school year. These schools have an average of 84% of their students eligible for Free/Reduced Price Lunch and have very little access to arts education in or out of school.
